Fatal Sacramento Shooting on 5 Freeway near 43rd Avenue
SACRAMENTO, CA (June 2, 2020) – A driver died after being shot by a passenger then run over by a car Tuesday evening in South Sacramento.
The incident happened around 9:00 p.m. on southbound 5 Freeway near the 43rd Avenue exit.
CHP officials said a 29-year-old man was driving southbound on the freeway in a Chevrolet sedan with two passengers, his girlfriend in the passenger seat and an unidentified 20-year-old man in the back seat.
For reasons unknown, the 20-year-old man shot the driver, forcing him to stop the car. Both the victim and his girlfriend got out of the car on the highway. That was when the shooter got behind the wheel and struck the victim with the car before driving away.
Moments later, a passing Honda sedan struck the shooting victim, who was still in the middle of the fast lane. The Honda driver stayed and called 911.
Emergency crews responded and pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
Vacaville police later arrested the suspect in the 800 block of Alamo Drive, off of 80 Freeway. The suspect had abandoned the vehicle and walked onto city streets via the Alamo Drive off-ramp before officers found him.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
