3 Hospitalized after Wrong-Way Crash on 17 Freeway [Phoenix, AZ]

Wrong-Way Driver Seriously Injured in Crash on 17 Freeway near Thomas Road

 
PHOENIX, AZ (May 27, 2020) – Three people sustained injuries in a wrong-way crash on 17 Freeway, Wednesday evening.
 
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the incident happened at about 7:40 PM. For unknown reasons, a 45-year-old man was driving his Suzuki hatchback northbound in the southbound lanes. After that, it collided head-on with a Ford pickup truck near Thomas Road.
 
Emergency crews transported the wrong-way driver to a hospital with serious injuries. Meanwhile, two passengers of the Ford needed hospitalization for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
 
Officers had to shut down affected areas until 10:00 PM to make way for clearing operations.
 
DPS continues to investigate the cause of the crash. Authorities will release additional information once it becomes available.
