CHP Officer Ray Lamas and Juvenile Taken to Hospital After Collision in San Jacinto

SAN JACINTO, CA (January 29, 2020) — A collision on Gilman Springs Road sent a CHP officer, and a juvenile Explorer Scout on a ride-along, to the hospital Wednesday night.

At around 6:15 p.m., San Gorgonio Pass CHP Officer Ray Lamas and the ride-along were assisting another CHP officer at the scene of a crash on Gilman Springs Road east of Bridge Street.

Lamas and the explorer returned to their patrol vehicle after assisting and buckled their seatbelts. They were discussing the first collision when a westbound 2006 Ford F-150 came upon traffic caused by the crash investigation.

The driver of the pickup truck was reportedly driving at an unsafe speed for the prevailing traffic conditions. As a result, he began to lose control of his vehicle as he tried to brake for traffic.

The Ford lost traction with the roadway and began spinning clockwise. It then rear-ended a 2014 Nissan Altima driven by a 25-year-old San Jacinto woman.

The pickup continued off the right side of the road onto the right-hand shoulder, where it crashed into the left rear of the CHP patrol vehicle.

Paramedics treated Lamas and the explorer at the scene. They subsequently transported them to Riverside University Health Systems Medical Center for further evaluation. Both of them were released with no injuries.

Meantime, the drivers of the Ford and Nissan also reported no injuries after their evaluation at the scene.

The CHP said alcohol or drug intoxication were not factors in the collision.
