Driver Arrested, Pedestrian Hurt after Chula Vista DUI Crash on 5 Freeway

 
CHULA VISTA, CA (January 2, 2020) – Officials arrested a woman after she injured a pedestrian in a DUI accident on 5 Freeway on Friday, January 24.
 
California Highway Patrol Officer Salvador Castro said they received reports of the crash near southbound 5 Freeway and J Street at around 2:05 a.m.
 
A woman drove her sedan southbound on 5 Freeway when the vehicle swerved off the right shoulder across the J Street on-ramp. After that, it went down an embankment off Bay Boulevard. Then struck a homeless man in an encampment, a local news source stated.
 
When the car came to a stop, the woman crawled away, then it burst into flames.
 
First responders rushed both the driver and the pedestrian to UCSD Medical Center for treatment of major injuries, Castro stated. Their identities were not immediately available.
 
Once medically cleared, the woman was expected to be arrested on suspicion of felony DUI.
