MOJAVE, CA (January 24, 2020) – Santiago Cabezas, 19, of Santa Ana died in a rear-end collision on 14 Freeway at around 1:04 a.m. on Thursday, January 23.
According to Josh Greengard with the California Highway Patrol Newhall Office, a white Honda Civic moved southbound on 14 Freeway. It approached Sierra Highway at a high rate of speed, Greengard said. At the same time, a red Volvo truck was stopped on the right shoulder of southbound on the freeway truck route north of Sierra Highway ahead of the white Honda. Then the white Honda Civic crashed into the rear of the red Volvo’s truck.
The driver of the Civic died a result of his sustained injuries. The driver of the Volvo was not harmed, according to Greengard.
Excessive speed, alcohol, and drugs may have played a role in this accident, Greengard wrote.
The crash shut down one of two southbound truck route lanes of the 14 Freeway for around four hours.
