2 Teen Boys Killed in Solo-Vehicle Fiery Crash on Highway 163 near Interstate 8
MISSION VALLEY, CA (January 18, 2020) – Two 15-year-old boys died in a fiery crash on Highway 163, early Saturday morning.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened at about 3:15 AM. Witnesses said a speeding BMW struck a guardrail on the ramp between Interstate 8 and Highway 163. Then, the vehicle fell 40 feet down, slamming into several trees before hitting the ground.
The impact of the crash caused the vehicle to burst into flames.
As per reports, five male teenagers, ranging from ages 15 to 19, were inside the burning vehicle. The 17-year-old driver and two passengers managed to exit the BMW, but two 15-year-old boys became trapped in the back seat. Firefighters found the boys’ bodies after putting out the flames.
Authorities withheld the identity of the deceased victims, pending notification of next of kin.
Emergency responders rushed the two remaining passengers to a local hospital with major injuries. Meanwhile, authorities arrested the 17-year-old driver at a hospital on suspicion of vehicular homicide and driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
CHP officers continue to investigate the fatal crash. Investigators also noted that the driver did not have a license and that the car was not registered to him. Authorities will release additional information once it becomes available.
