19-Year-Old Utah Marine Killed after Carlsbad Wrong-Way Crash
CARLSBAD, CA (January 15, 2020) – A 19-year-old Marine from Utah died after a wrong-way crash on 5 Freeway on Tuesday, January 14.
On Wednesday, the San Diego Medical Examiner identified the man as 19-year-old Matthew Ryan Adams.
According to a local news source, before the accident, officers tried to stop an F-150 truck for a traffic violation. The suspect drove at speeds of up to 100 mph. Sometimes the driver traveled in the wrong-way on the freeway, police said.
About 10 minutes into the pursuit, the truck went into the northbound lanes in the wrong direction. He went near the Las Flores Bridge in an attempt to evade police.
Oceanside Police Department officers then did not pursue the truck because it traveled the wrong way on the highway. It moved southbound in the northbound lanes, investigators said. Instead, officers monitored the suspect with the help of a San Diego County Sheriff’s Office helicopter.
Later on, the suspect collided his truck head-on into a light-colored Pontiac Grand Prix moving in the northbound lanes.
Paramedics pulled out a male passenger in the F-150 from the wreckage. They rushed him to Scripps La Jolla Hospital.
The 42-year-old driver of the truck, a man from San Diego, died in the crash along with the man the Pontiac.
Police identified Adams as an active service member of the United States Marine Corps.
