Two Fatally Hurt in Carlsbad Wrong-Way Pursuit Crash on 5 Freeway
CARLSBAD, CA (January 15, 2020) — Two peopled died after a wrong-way pursuit crash on 5 Freeway in Carlsbad on Tuesday, January 14.
Oceanside Police tried to pull over a black pick-up truck when they noticed him speeding on North Coast Highway. When the truck pulled over and officers went out, the pickup drove off.
The truck moved south on southbound 5 Freeway for miles. Around Highway 78 the truck went off the freeway and then re-entered going the wrong way.
Minutes later, the truck collided into a silver sedan driven by the 19-year old from Utah. The collision happened on northbound 5 Freeway just south of Las Flores Drive.
Both drivers died in the accident. A passenger in the suspect’s vehicle did not want to cooperate with police and refused to get out of the vehicle. Paramedics eventually brought the passenger to a nearby hospital. It was not immediately determined if they will face any charges.
California Highway Patrol identified one of the drivers as a 19-year-old Marine based out of Camp Pendleton.
Authorities closed the northbound lanes for hours for their investigation. They reopened lanes just before 6:00 a.m.
