Oceanside Pursuit Crash on 5 Freeway Kills Marine and Another Person

 
OCEANSIDE, CA (January 14, 2020) — A pursuit crash on 5 Freeway killed a 19-year-old Camp Pendleton Marine and another driver in Oceanside early Tuesday.
 
The crash occurred past midnight in the northbound side, south of the Las Flores Drive exit.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the police tried to pull over a truck driver for a minor traffic violation near Monterey Drive in Oceanside. The truck driver pulled over. However, he sped off when an officer started to approach his vehicle.
 
The driver then pulled onto the freeway in the wrong direction, traveling south in the northbound lanes. A short time later, the truck collided head-on into a Pontiac sedan.
 
As a result, the man in the truck and the sedan driver died at the scene. A passenger in the truck sustained severe injuries and was taken to the hospital.
 
The CHP officers said the Pontiac driver was a 19-year-old Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton. They withheld his name pending notification of his family.
 
However, the truck driver was a 42-year-old man from San Diego man.
 
The crash prompted officials to close northbound 5 Freeway until about 5:45 a.m.
