Margaret Bodenschatz Hospitalized after Wrong-Way Crash on 5 Freeway [Cottonwood, CA]

75-Year-Old Margaret Bodenschatz Crashes into CHP Patrol Vehicle on 5 Freeway

 
COTTONWOOD, CA (January 10, 2020) – Authorities identified 75-year-old Margaret Bodenschatz of Anderson as the driver involved in a wrong-way crash on 5 Freeway, Friday morning.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened at about 4:00 AM. A 2011 Chevrolet Impala was driving north in the southbound lanes of 5 Freeway. One CHP officer spotted the Chevrolet and attempted to stop the driver.
 
Meanwhile, a second officer positioned his vehicle to form a traffic break to prevent other drivers from colliding with the errant driver. Then, the Chevrolet drove past the first officer and crashed into the second CHP vehicle near Sunset Hills Drive.
 
Emergency responders rushed the Chevrolet driver, later identified as Bodenschatz, to Mercy Medical Center as a precaution. One of the officers sustained minor injuries in the crash and was transported to a hospital In Red Bluff.
 
Investigators believe that Bodenschatz suffered a medical condition at the time of the incident. Authorities will release additional information once it becomes available.
