9-Year-Old Emiliano Hernandez Dies after Southeast Bakersfield Crash
BAKERSFIELD, CA (January 7, 2020) – Authorities identified 9-year-old Emiliano Hernandez as the child killed in a hit-and-run crash in Southeast Bakersfield, Tuesday morning.
According to the Bakersfield Police Department, the incident happened at about 3:33 AM. A vehicle was traveling southbound on Cottonwood Road when a pickup truck pulled out in front of it from East Pacheco Road. After the collision, another vehicle struck the victim’s vehicle.
The driver of the victim vehicle did not sustain injuries. However, his four juvenile passengers, including Hernandez, sustained moderate to major injuries. Unfortunately, Hernandez died of his injuries at the hospital.
Meanwhile, the pickup driver, identified as 32-year-old Evaristo Perez Nunez, fled the area. Authorities later located the suspect, but Nunez he resisted and assaulted an officer, causing minor injury.
Officers later booked Nunez into the Kern County jail for felony hit-and-run causing serious injury, assault on a peace officer, resisting arrest, driving without a license, driving without insurance, right-of-way violation, and possession of an open container of alcohol in a vehicle.
