Driver Dies After Car Collides with Train in Santa Ana
SANTA ANA, CA (January 09, 2020) — A driver died Monday evening in a collision with train on South Grand Avenue in Santa Ana.
According to the Santa Ana police, they responded to the incident at around 5:30 p.m. at 800 South Grand Avenue. When they arrived at the scene, they found that a Metrolink train fatally hit a driver who tried to cross its tracks while the railroad arms were down.
Inside the car was a person who was pronounced dead at the scene. A pitbull was also inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. The authorities had it transported to the Orange County Emergency Pet Clinic in Garden Grove with minor injuries.
The witnesses said that the car was northbound on Grand Avenue when the railroad arms came down. The driver yielded to the train that was traveling southeast. However, once the train passed, the driver of the car decided to go and was struck by a train that was traveling northwest.
The force of the impact pushed the vehicle 680 feet. It was unclear, however, how fast it was going before it came to a rest.
None of the 219 passengers aboard the train reported any injuries. The commuters were shuttled to their destinations following the crash.
Our sincerest sympathies to the family and friends of the victim.
