60-Year-Old Alberta Fernandez de Zuniga Dies after Snowy Highway Crash
WARNER SPRINGS, CA (December 26, 2019) – Authorities identified 60-year-old Alberta Fernandez de Zuniga of Borrego Springs as the passenger killed in a crash on San Felipe Road, Thursday morning.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened at about 6:50 AM. A 2019 Toyota Camry was northbound in fresh snow at a high rate of speed on San Felipe Road. Then, the driver lost control and veered over the shoulder. There, the vehicle crashed into the embankment.
A passenger in the backseat, later identified as Zuniga, was thrown forward into the dash and windshield. Emergency responders later pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
The driver, Zuniga’s 29-year-old son, and a male passenger, also Zuniga’s son, did not sustain injuries in the crash.
Investigators ruled out alcohol and drugs as factors in the fatal crash. In addition, they noted that Zuniga was not secured in a seatbelt at the time of the incident. Authorities will release additional information once it becomes available.
