Jonathan Marroquin and Unborn Baby Killed, Three Others Injured in Phoenix Accident
PHOENIX, AZ (January 6, 2020) – A man identified as 18-year-old Jonathan Marroquin and a teen’s unborn baby died after a crash on Thursday, December 26.
The accident occurred at around 11:15 a.m. in the area of 35th Avenue and Bell Road.
Sgt. Maggie Cox of the Phoenix Police Department said the incident began with a two-car crash. A Ford Mustang driven by a 63-year-old woman was about to turn left from eastbound Bell Road. Then a second vehicle, a Dodge Avenger driven by a 25-year-old man, traveled west at a high rate of speed and entered the intersection. The vehicle crashed with the Mustang.
Cox said the Avenger then spun around and continued several hundred feet west. It then went up onto the sidewalk and hit several pedestrians.
Marroquin, one of the pedestrians, died at the hospital. A 15-year-old girl who was 31 weeks pregnant lost her baby. The 15-year-old reportedly had serious injuries but officials expect her to survive. Paramedics transported an 18-year-old woman to the hospital with minor injuries. A 51-year-old man also had a minor foot injury and medics released him at the scene.
Marroquin reportedly jumped in front of the pregnant teenager to save her life. His family created a GoFundMe to help for his funeral expenses.
Investigators believe that the victims had just gotten off a bus. She also said none of the drivers sustained injuries.
Cox said officers evaluated both drivers and determined that they are not impaired. Yet the Avenger’s speed appeared to be a factor in the collision. Investigators will submit charges for manslaughter, aggravated assault and endangerment for the driver of the Avenger. His identity was not yet released.
