Collision on Highway 1 Injures Motorcycle Rider at Pomponio State Beach
POMPONIO STATE BEACH, CA (December 20, 2019) — A motorcyclist suffered injuries in a collision on Highway 1 at Pomponio State Beach Sunday afternoon.
The California Highway Patrol said the collision occurred at about 1:00 p.m. The motorcycle was southbound on the highway at more than 100 miles per hour. At the same time, a Lexus was pulling out of the parking lot of Pomponio State Beach.
The driver of the Lexus reportedly saw the motorcycle coming at a high speed, so she stopped. However, the motorcyclist jumped off his motorcycle. The motorcycle did not hit the Lexus, but the rider slammed into the Lexus.
Emergency personnel airlifted the motorcycle rider, a 29-year-old man from Greece, to Stanford Medical Center. At the scene, he appeared to have suffered only minor injuries like road rash. However, further examination at the hospital determined that he suffered a broken hand, a broken leg, and some brain trauma.
On the other hand, the driver of the Lexus did not have any injuries.
The officials closed Highway 1 at about 1:30 p.m. during the investigation and cleanup. The highway reopened at around 3:00 p.m.
Motorcyclists are at great risk so it is important you are aware of them on the road. Always make sure it is safe to make a lane change. Scanning the streets, the next lane over, and using your mirrors can help you be more aware. Avoid accidents at all costs by driving defensively.
