53-Year-Old Tonya Pearson Dies after Hit-and-Run Crash on Interstate 5

 
SKAGIT COUNTY, WA (November 20, 2019) – Authorities identified 53-year-old Tonya Pearson of Burlington as the woman fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver on Interstate 5, early Wednesday morning.
 
According to the Washington State Patrol, the incident happened at about 1:17 AM. Pearson was walking in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 when an unknown vehicle hit her. The driver of the vehicle did not stop to render aid and fled the area.
 
A short time later, a second vehicle struck the victim. The driver, identified as 46-year old Jason Merrill of Mariposa, California, stopped and immediately called for help.
 
Unfortunately, Pearson succumbed to injuries and died at the scene.
 
Troopers continue to investigate the fatal collision. Anyone with information about the hit-and-run driver can call the Washington State Patrol and reference case number 19-025070.
