Two Killed in Bakersfield Elk Grove Collision on 5 Freeway

 
ELK GROVE, CA (November 19, 2019) – A driver and passenger died in a big rig collision on 5 Freeway near Elk Grove Boulevard on Sunday, November 17.
 
According to CHP South Sacramento, just after 9 p.m., a Nissan Versa traveled around 70 mph on 5 Freeway. Then it struck a tractor-trailer that had come to a stop in the right southbound lane. The big rig was stopped because of a prior traffic crash, CHP said.
 
The Nissan did not slow down and slammed directly into the back of the truck. The vehicle’s driver and a passenger in the front seat suffered fatal injuries, the CHP said. The truck’s driver was not hurt.
 
The accident remains under investigation. Officials are still determining whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the collision.
 
Sacramento County Coroner’s office has not yet released the identity of the victims pending notification of loved ones.
 
Officials closed southbound 5 Freeway for a time but it was back open around 11 p.m.
